How to rig my MK I mainsheet

Postby Ron Cole » Wed Jul 29, 2015 3:39 pm

Hi all, I am a new owner of an old SJ21 MKI that was not well maintained. I have rebuilt a badly damaged keel and now am finally ready to put it in the water I find that I cannot figure out the rigging plan.
I have searched everywhere to find a diagram, images or photos of how to rig the mainsail. I have seen many versions (and have read the manual) but none appear to have exactly the same layout of hardware, blocks, etc. as mine,
I am thinking that one part of the puzzle is that maybe the boat was sold missing a fiddle block on the end of the boom? I have attached photos.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. After a month and a half of delay in restoring the keel, I am so eager to get on the water for the first time.
Regards,
Ron Cole

Yes, it is standard rigged. You need a double fiddle block at the end of the boom, ideally with a snap shackle for quick release. I can't remember if i have a becket on my fiddle block, but it can't hurt even though you don't use it. here is what is on mine:

To rig you tie the mainsheet to the becket on either gunnels standing block, then through the lower fiddle block to the opposite gunnel block, back through the top of the fiddle block, around the original gunnel block's sheave and down to the cockpit cam cleat. Here is a pic i found online:

It is confusing at first, but you figure it out in time.

Thank you very much, for your reply and information, kuriti. That was very helpful.
Yes, confusing at first but appears darn simple now. Missing a puzzle piece (the fiddle block) was not helping me solve to puzzle, either.
Being a newbie owner of a San Juan and first time on the forum, I must say seeing your reply was encouraging.
Cheers,
Ron
