replace with a fixed foot mainsail?

Postby Ron Cole » Fri Aug 12, 2016 12:25 pm

Hello,
I am thinking of ordering a new mainsail.
The sail manufacturer says "'Mainsail is a fixed foot and a new design would be a loose foot which would give you much more control of the sail."
Is this right? I would like some opinions from the SJ21 community.
Regards,
Ron

it would give you more control, particularly in light wind, but i am unsure of the race implications of that. someone here knows or it is in the bylaws if racing is something you want to do.

Loose footed mains are not a "faster" sail but they are easier for the single-hander. When loosening the out haul, you don't have to "shuffle" the foot on the boom to get it in the right position. You can also see the shape of the sail much better.
Sail makers have told me that the loose foot mains are not necessarily less expensive than a shelf foot main.

I think mine was exactly the same, no difference in price for either. I think they did a little more reinforcement in the corner for the loose footed main, and that work maybe made up for not sewing a bolt along the entire foot.
