2013 Seattle Nood!

Congrats to Marc, Chris, and even though it's a little oddly self serving, myself for finishing 1st, 2nd and 3rd at the 2013 Seattle NOOD.

This was by far one of the best Seattle NOOD's we've had, and not to rub it in, but those that weren't able to make it really missed out. The weather was fantastic, some overcast here and there, a few showers as well, but the wind was good ranging from light to moderate. In the end we got in 16 races, over 3 full days.

We had a decent showing, topping out at 8 boats this year with 7 making it onto the water, far off the 15 boats we've put on the line in the past. Mike Dukes had a gudgeon problem that knocked out his first day on the water, and an attempt to fix it on the second day that failed knocked out his second day when a scuba diver was nowhere to be found, so unfortunately we missed Mike's presence on the water. We ended up with 5 boats flying spinnakers, Kermit, Wooglin, Mizu, Jessie, and Charmed Juan. And we had Juans 2 Be, and Coir Jaot flying those two white wings.

Kermit was his usual self, with some incredible team work from three generations of Vander Schalie's! Kermit amassed an incredible 14 bullets out of 16 chances, but the fleet was much closer than that sounds. The rest of the spinnaker boats were constantly nipping at Kermit's heels and making things hard on Marc. Wooglin was incredibly consistent amassing alot of 2nd and 3rd place finishes, while Jessie and Mizu were always never far behind. But, by the end of the day everyone, and I mean everyone was making things really hard on Kermit. Somewhere in there Paul Von Stubbe in Juans 2 Be cracked the whip and took it to the entire fleet, coming across the line in 1st place beating out all 5 spinnaker boats with nothing but those two white wings, and taking one bullet away from Marc. Congrats to Paul for such an incredible race and teaching the fleet a lesson!

By the end of the first day it was Kermit in the lead, followed by Wooglin and Mizu. The second day was much of the same, Kermit in the lead with many of the rest of the fleet close enough to reach out and grab his transom at one point or another. Most of the time just at the start, but we had our shots on the course occasionally:) Unfortunately this was an all bullet's day for Kermit, and the race for 1st was that much more out of reach. Wooglin, while 1st was getting hard and harder to come back and reach had solidified his 2nd place standing. The race for 3rd overall was heating up as Jim Miller brought his wife Anne on board as crew and put in a pretty dominating performance to slide up into 3rd place overall at the end of the day.

The 3rd day came with Mizu in a 3 point hole, but David Garman and I started clicking, and really turned up the heat on the 3 boats in front of us. Though we weren't able to hold the lead due to some excellent spinnaker work by Wooglin and Kermit, Mizu did round the windward mark first in one of the early races of the day. Not holding that lead fired us up too, and no more than 1 or 2 races later we were able to round the Windward mark right on Kermit's heels. Kermit went in towards shore, and Mizu declined to chase feeling as if the outside course was favored. This choice paid off and we rounded the leeward mark in 1st place. One could note just how close the fleet was getting to Kermit as while rounding the leeward mark, Mizu noticed a distinct hint of "heated discussion" coming from a certain green boat that I don't think anyone's ever heard before... After rounding the mark, and a couple covering moves on the way to the finish, and Mizu was on her way to taking a bullet away from Kermit.

At the end of the third day it was Kermit in 1st, followed by Wooglin and Mizu.

Congrats to Kermit for taking 1st overall, and better get ready because the fleet is getting closer and closer every year.

Thanks
Christian
